The Tic Tac brand was born in 1969 in Italy, created by Michele Ferrero, son of founder Pietro Ferrero, who had launched the company in Alba (Piedmont) in 1946. Originally called "Refreshing Mints," these little candies were renamed Tic Tac in 1970 – an onomatopoeic name inspired by the characteristic "tick-tock" sound made by the tin lid. The iconic Orange flavor followed in 1974, and the range has continually expanded since then. Today sold in over 100 countries, 35% of the world's Tic Tacs are made at the Ferrero factory in Cork, Ireland.
