The history of Tootsie Roll dates back to 1896 when a man named Leo Hirshfield opened his candy shop in New York City . He wanted to create a chocolate-flavored candy that wouldn't melt in the heat and that he could sell at a reasonable price: the Toostie Roll was born.
Hirschfield 's first candy was Bromangelon jelly powder. He completed the invention of Tootsie Rolls in 1907, after patenting a technique to give them their unique texture. He named the candy after his daughter Clara, whose nickname was "Tootsie." The first Tootsie Rolls were marketed in September 1908.
