Legend has it that it was Spanish soldiers during the 1938 Civil War who gave the idea for these candies to creator Forrest Edward Mars. Indeed, the soldiers had treats covered in a sugar shell to protect the chocolate from the sun. In the late 1940s, he partnered with Bruce Murrie and the two began making sugar-coated chocolate candies. Thus, the M&M'S brand takes the initials of its two creators.
