The Jelly Belly story dates back to 1869 when Gustav Goelitz, a German immigrant, founded his candy factory in Belleville, Illinois. But it was in 1976 that the legend truly began: David Klein , a visionary candy distributor, created a new type of jelly bean with the flavor infused to the center (and not just the shell). He named his invention "Jelly Belly" in homage to the blues musician Lead Belly. The first eight flavors included Very Cherry, Root Beer, and Cream Soda. President Ronald Reagan , a big fan who used these candies to quit pipe smoking, propelled the brand: 3.5 tons of Jelly Belly were delivered for his inauguration in 1981, and personalized jars bearing the presidential seal were given to foreign dignitaries. Reagan even sent them into space aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1983. Today, Jelly Belly offers over 100 flavors, and Bean Boozled, launched in the 2000s, became a viral phenomenon on YouTube and TikTok.
