Suitable for vegans , Branston Original Pickle contains no artificial colors or preservatives. Refrigerate after opening and consume within 6 weeks. Contains barley (gluten) and sulfites .
Tip : Branston is the heart of the legendary British cheese and pickle sandwich – spread it generously on sliced bread with mature cheddar! It also pairs perfectly with the traditional Ploughman's Lunch found in English pubs (cheese, ham, bread, pickled onions). The British also add it to their meat pies, stews, and even burgers for a truly British touch.
About Branston : Branston Pickle originated in 1922 in the village of Branston , near Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire , in the heart of England. The recipe is attributed to Mrs. Caroline Graham and her two daughters, Evelyn and Ermentrude , who are said to have developed it at Branston Lodge . The manufacturer Crosse & Blackwell – whose origins date back to 1706 in London – bought the recipe and launched production in a huge red-brick factory, originally built in 1918 to manufacture machine guns for the First World War! The factory then employed 600 people , two-thirds of whom were women. The "Branston" trademark was registered in 1929. In 1972 , the famous television advertisement with the slogan " Bring out the Branston " became iconic and remains memorable to this day. In 1999 , Branston Pickle was voted one of the 50 most iconic British brands of the 20th century . After being owned by Nestlé (1960) and then Premier Foods (2004), the brand was acquired in 2012 by the Japanese group Mizkan for £92.5 million . Production remains firmly British, currently based in Bury St Edmunds , Suffolk. More than 17 million jars are sold each year in the UK, making Branston the undisputed leader with over 60% market share in the pickle category!
