Henderson's Relish is a cult British condiment produced in Sheffield since 1885. Often compared to Worcestershire sauce, it differs in that it contains no anchovies, making it 100% vegan . Its secret recipe blends vinegar, tamarind, cayenne pepper, and cloves for a unique tangy, fruity, and spicy profile.

Henderson's Relish , affectionately known as "Hendo's" by Sheffield residents, is much more than just a condiment: it's a Yorkshire institution. This tangy and spicy brown sauce has been a staple in Northern English families' meals for over 130 years, with a devotion bordering on worship.

The flavor profile is complex and balanced: notes of fruity tamarind, a hint of cayenne pepper, the aromatic warmth of clove, and a touch of garlic, all carried by a vinegar base. Unlike Worcestershire sauce, which contains anchovies, Henderson's is entirely plant-based—approved by the Vegetarian Society and perfect for vegans. The taste is umami, tangy, and slightly sweet, with an acidity that enlivens any dish.

The people of Sheffield use it on absolutely everything (except desserts): fish and chips as a substitute for vinegar, pies, stews, eggs, cheese on toast, sausages... Comedian Tom Wrigglesworth sums it up perfectly: "Outsiders think Henderson's is Sheffield's answer to Worcestershire sauce. Sheffielders think it's the answer to everything." The sauce is also excellent in a Bloody Mary or as a marinade base for meats and vegetables.

Tip : Mix a few drops of Henderson's Relish into your gravy for unparalleled depth, or add it to your soups and stews at the end of cooking. Enthusiasts even claim it pairs surprisingly well with dark chocolate!

Henry Henderson created this gravy in 1885 at 35 Broad Lane in Sheffield, where he was a druggist and merchant. The exact recipe remains a closely guarded secret, known only to three members of the owning family. Bought in 1940 by Charles Hinksman, the company is still owned by his descendants, the Freemans. Production has never left Sheffield – initially near the university, and then in a new factory since 2013. The gravy has inspired flavored crisps, clothing, and even themed Christmas cards. Local celebrities like actor Sean Bean and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders stock up on it every time they return home. A true symbol of regional pride, strong and northern – "Strong and Northern," as the label proclaims.
