The Tim Tam Dark is the dark chocolate version of Australia's most famous biscuit. Made by Arnott's since 1964, it combines two crisp cocoa biscuits, a smooth dark chocolate cream, and an intense 38% cocoa coating. A sophisticated treat for lovers of rich chocolate.
The Tim Tam Dark offers a more intense and sophisticated experience than the original version. The structure remains true to the Tim Tam DNA – two crispy malted biscuits sandwiched around a smooth cream filling – but everything here is made of dark chocolate . The 38% cocoa mass coating provides an elegant bitterness that contrasts with the sweetness of the filling.
Texture is the secret to Tim Tam's magic: the biscuit offers a satisfying crunch that quickly gives way to the velvety cream at its center. The dark chocolate coating melts in your mouth, releasing deep cocoa notes that are less sweet than the milk chocolate version. Each bite is a perfect balance of crunch, melt-in-your-mouth texture, and intense chocolate flavor.
These biscuits are delicious plain with tea or coffee, but Australians have invented a cult technique: the Tim Tam Slam . Bite off two opposite corners of the biscuit, use it as a straw to sip a hot drink (coffee, hot chocolate, or even milk), then gobble up the softened biscuit before it collapses. The coating melts, the biscuit becomes chewy – it's a unique experience!
Tip : For the perfect Tim Tam Slam with the Dark version, use an espresso or cappuccino – the coffee's bitterness intensifies the cocoa notes of the dark chocolate. Keep your Tim Tams chilled in warm weather to preserve the crispness of the coating.
The story of Tim Tams began in 1958 when Ian Norris, a director at Arnott's, discovered the British Penguin biscuit during a trip and decided to create "a better version." The biscuit was launched in 1964 , and its name comes from the horse that won the 1958 Kentucky Derby, a suggestion made by Ross Arnott. Arnott's, founded in Newcastle in 1865, has become an Australian institution – its Huntingwood factory produces 3,000 Tim Tams per minute and uses 20 tonnes of chocolate cream and 27 tonnes of coating every day! With approximately 35 million packs sold annually in Australia (that's 400 million biscuits), the Tim Tam is much more than just a biscuit: it's a national symbol sought after by Australian expats all over the world.
