In 1914, the "Blue Diamond" label was introduced, the blue diamond symbolizing high quality and distinguishing California almonds from Spanish and Italian imports. A first receiving and packing plant was built in Sacramento, followed by shelling equipment in 1922 and a five-story factory in 1929. Blue Diamond was a pioneer in the industry: the first grower cooperative for marketing almonds, the first commercial sheller, the first continuous blanching line, and the first to adopt electronic sorting. Today, the cooperative comprises approximately 3,000 growers , representing more than half of California's almond farmers, who produce over 80% of the world's supply. The Sacramento plant spans 90 acres and is the largest of its kind in the world. In 2013, the Almond Innovation Center was established to develop new applications.
The Carolina Reaper was created by Ed Currie , founder of the PuckerButt Pepper Company in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Initially named HP22B ("Higher Power," a reference to his Christian faith, pot #22, plant B), this chili pepper is the result of a cross between a Habanero pepper from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent and a Naga Bhut Jolokia from Pakistan. After 10 years of development, tests at Winthrop University in 2010 revealed phenomenal heat.
